The first story that always comes to mind when someone asks me for a tale from abroad is from my trip to Amsterdam; the night I went to see a sex show. I made the deliberate decision not to share this with XploreU because I thought the content might be less than appropriate. But technically everything that happened was legal, and there’s really no reason not to tell it… and it’s a really good story. So here goes.


I had never been high before. I went with one other friend of mine and the two of us were staying in a Christian youth hostel in the middle of the red light district (which was a pretty good hostel if you don’t mind sermons with breakfast). One night (I think the first night) we did what any good tourist would and went to a coffee shop to do some drugs. It was the Rock Around The World Coffee Shop and I really liked it. We first split a “space brownie” that had a little alien on it telling us we needed to wait an hour before we felt high. Well, I ate my half of the brownie and was not feeling it, so fifteen minutes later I convinced my friend that we should split a joint (in retrospect the loss of my ability to tell time probably indicated that I was a bit high). After the joint I was still not impressed and decided to go get an alcoholic beverage at a nearby convenience store. Side note: I was rated the number 2 biggest lightweight out of the 200 people who attended my exchange program, with the astounding ability to get schwasted off of a single beer. My friend got herself a jagerbomb and I was happily sipping a cider when I had an idea. “Hey, why don’t we go see a sex show?”
